Walk for Suicide Loss & Awareness Brings Healing and Hope

Walk for Suicide Loss & Awareness Brings Healing and Hope

Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025 | Daviess Community Hospital | Washington, Indiana

On a crisp fall evening, more than 100 people came together at Daviess Community Hospital for the first-ever Walk for Suicide Loss & Awareness. With glow sticks lighting the path and stories of resilience shared, the community joined in remembrance, support, and healing.

The event raised nearly $3,000 to benefit suicide prevention and mental health initiatives in Daviess County.

A Community United

Participants walked together around the hospital campus, honoring the lives of loved ones lost to suicide. Miss Northeast Teen Abbi Knepp opened the evening with a stirring performance of the National Anthem, setting a tone of reverence and unity.

For many, the most impactful moment came from Amber Crews, PMHNP-BC, a Washington native and mental health nurse practitioner. Crews bravely shared her own journey through addiction, depression, and suicidal thoughts—emphasizing that hope is possible and stigma can be broken.

“There was a time when I thought I wouldn’t survive,” Crews said. “But with faith, therapy, medication, and perseverance, I found my way forward. Suicide is not a word to be whispered or hidden. Events like this show that we can talk about mental health, put real faces to the struggle, and remind people they are never alone.”

Voices of Gratitude

“This was such a meaningful event for attendees who came together to remember those we have lost,” said Angie Steiner, Director of the Daviess Community Hospital Foundation. “Amber’s message of hope resonated with everyone present. You could feel the strength and compassion in our community.”

Event committee chair Alyssa Cornelius added: “I’m very thankful to every participant, our sponsors, and DCH. The walk was such a healing experience with a powerful message. I hope for many more in the future.”
