Women's Scar Management & Remodeling

Gentle, private, evidence-informed care for C-section, breast/chest, and abdominal/pelvic scars

At Daviess Community Hospital’s CORE Center, we specialize in women’s scar care after C-section, breast/chest surgery (lumpectomy, mastectomy, reconstruction), hysterectomy, laparoscopic abdominal/pelvic procedures, and other surgeries or injuries. Our goal is to reduce tightness, sensitivity, and pain, improve mobility and posture, and help you return to daily life with comfort and confidence. Care is available in Washington and Odon, Indiana, and we welcome patients from Daviess County and across Southern Indiana.

Our approach is consent-driven, trauma-informed, and private. We explain every option and pace treatment to your comfort.

Why scars can limit comfort and motion

Scar tissue is part of normal healing, but collagen can organize in dense, irregular patterns that feel tight, tender, or “stuck.” These adhesions may limit tissue glide, reduce range of motion, irritate nearby nerves, or contribute to posture changes (e.g., chest/shoulder tightness after breast surgery; lower-abdominal pulling after C-section).

With the right plan—gentle loading, targeted soft-tissue work, movement, and home strategies—scars can become softer, more mobile, and less noticeable over time.

Who may benefit

Consider a scar evaluation if you notice:

  • Tightness or pulling with reaching, lifting, standing up straight, or rolling in bed
  • Sensitivity, numbness, or tenderness along or around the scar
  • Difficulty with overhead reach, fastening a bra, or turning your head/shoulders after breast/chest surgery
  • Lower-abdominal pulling, discomfort with core activity, or positional pain after C-section or hysterectomy
  • A raised, thick, or immobile scar, or tethering that limits posture or motion
  • Discomfort with clothing/undergarments over the scar area

If swelling is present (e.g., after breast cancer treatment), see Lymphedema Management for coordinated care.
For pelvic or postpartum symptoms, see Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation and Prenatal & Postpartum Rehabilitation.

How women’s scar management & remodeling helps

Your therapist designs a plan around your scar’s age, location, thickness, sensitivity, and your activity goals. Treatment may include:

  • Soft-tissue mobilization & gentle stretch to improve tissue glide and reduce pulling
  • Instrument-assisted techniques (e.g., Graston®, ASTYM®) when appropriate and consented
  • Myofascial release & desensitization to ease tenderness or nerve irritation
  • Scar mobility training to restore shoulder/chest, neck, or core movement
  • Scar care guidance (e.g., silicone sheeting/gels, hydration, sun protection) when indicated
  • Posture & movement strategies to reduce strain on healing tissues
  • Functional exercise to gradually load collagen and support healthy remodeling
  • Home program with simple self-care techniques to maintain progress

Results are individual. Older scars often improve with consistent care; complete removal isn’t typical. Our goals are less tightness and sensitivity, better motion, and a more comfortable, natural feel.

Common women’s scars we treat

  • Breast/chest surgery: lumpectomy, mastectomy, reconstruction; axillary incision tightness
  • Abdominal/pelvic surgery: C-section, hysterectomy, laparoscopic or open procedures
  • Scars after trauma or other surgeries that affect posture, motion, or comfort

What to expect

Evaluation

We review your history and goals, and assess scar mobility, thickness, sensitivity, nearby joint motion (shoulders, spine, hips), and posture. You decide which areas you’re comfortable having examined or treated.

Personalized plan

Together we set clear goals and a visit schedule. Sessions are private, comfortable, and consent-driven, with steady progress that fits your routine and activity level.

Progress you can feel

We track changes in tissue mobility, pain/sensitivity, range of motion, posture, and function, and adjust your plan as you improve. With permission, we coordinate with your surgeon/oncology or OB-GYN team as needed.

FAQs

How long does scar remodeling take?
It varies by scar age, size, and location. Many people notice change within a few visits, with continued improvements over weeks to months.

Is treatment painful?
Care is gentle and patient-paced. You may feel mild, short-lived soreness as tissues loosen. We adjust technique to your comfort.

Can you treat older scars?
Yes. Older scars can often become softer and more mobile with consistent care, even years later.

Will my scar disappear?
Complete removal isn’t typical. The goal is less tightness and sensitivity, better motion, and a smoother, more comfortable feel—often with a more flattering appearance.
