Language Therapy

Build stronger communication—for home, school, work, and community

At Daviess Community Hospital’s CORE Center, our speech-language pathologists (SLPs) help children, teens, and adults improve language skills so they can understand others, express ideas, and participate more confidently in everyday life. With outpatient clinics in Washington and Odon, Indiana, we offer individualized, evidence-based language therapy close to home.

Who can benefit from language therapy

  • Children with delayed language, limited vocabulary, difficulty following directions, or trouble telling stories
  • School-age students who struggle with classroom language (listening, note-taking, explaining, reading comprehension, written expression)
  • Teens and adults with word-finding difficulty, trouble organizing thoughts, or language changes after illness or injury (e.g., aphasia after stroke)
  • Anyone who feels language challenges are affecting success at school, work, or in social situations

If communication feels hard—or family, teachers, or coworkers often ask for clarification—an evaluation can help determine the best next step.

What to expect

Evaluation

Your SLP completes a focused assessment of receptive language (understanding), expressive language (speaking), and functional communication. For adults, we screen for aphasia and related language changes after stroke/TBI; for students, we consider classroom demands.

Personalized plan

Your plan is tailored to age, goals, and daily routines. Therapy may include:

  • Vocabulary and concept building
  • Following directions and listening strategies
  • Sentence structure and grammar
  • Narrative skills (retelling and explaining)
  • Word-finding strategies and semantic mapping
  • Question-asking and conversation skills
  • Reading/listening comprehension and organizing ideas for written expression
  • Home practice and family/caregiver coaching
  • School or provider coordination when appropriate

Ongoing progress

We measure outcomes, update goals as skills improve, and focus on carryover—so new skills show up during meals, homework, meetings, and community activities.

FAQs

Do you work with schools?
Yes. With permission, we collaborate with teachers and school teams to support classroom success and carryover.

Is this the same as tutoring?
No. SLPs address the language foundation behind learning—understanding, organizing, and expressing ideas—so tutoring and schoolwork can be more effective.

How long does therapy take?
It varies by age, goals, and diagnosis. Your SLP will discuss a plan and expected timeline after your evaluation.
