Articulation & Phonological Therapy
Clearer speech for children, teens, and adults
At Daviess Community Hospital’s CORE Center, our speech-language
pathologists help people of all ages improve how clearly they speak.
Articulation & phonological therapy targets speech sound errors (for example, saying “wabbit”
for “rabbit”) and sound pattern errors (for example, leaving
off final sounds). Treatment is individualized, evidence-based, and designed
to build confidence in everyday conversations—at home, school, work,
and in the community.
Who can benefit
- Toddlers and preschoolers who are late to develop sounds or are hard to
understand
- School-age children with ongoing sound errors that affect reading, spelling,
or social confidence
- Teens and adults with persistent sound errors (e.g., /r/, /s/, /l/) or
speech changes after injury/illness
- Individuals whose speech is unclear to teachers, coworkers, or unfamiliar listeners
If family, teachers, or others frequently ask for repetitions—or
you notice frustration when communicating—an evaluation can help
you understand next steps.
What to expect
1) Evaluation
Your speech-language pathologist (SLP) completes a clear, practical assessment
of speech sounds, oral-motor skills, and how well others understand you
(intelligibility). We discuss goals that matter to you (e.g., classroom
success, work presentations, social participation).
2) Personalized plan
Therapy may include:
-
Sound production training (motor-based practice, shaping, and cueing)
-
Phonological approaches (minimal pairs, cycles, contrast therapy)
-
Carryover strategies to use new sounds in words, sentences, reading, and conversation
-
Home practice with simple, structured activities
-
Family/caregiver coaching to support progress between sessions
When relevant, we collaborate with schools, pediatricians, or other therapists.
3) Ongoing progress
We monitor outcomes, adjust the plan as skills grow, and focus on carryover
to everyday speaking situations.
Signs your child may need an evaluation
- Speech is difficult to understand compared with peers
- Sounds are left off, switched, or replaced (e.g., “tar” for
“car”)
- Frustration during speaking or avoidance of certain words
- Reading/spelling challenges that may be tied to sound patterns
- Teachers report concerns about being understood in class
For teens and adults, common signs include persistent /r/, /s/, /z/, or
/l/ errors, or reduced clarity after illness/injury.
