Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization (ASTYM)

Evidence-informed manual therapy to restore motion and reduce pain

At Daviess Community Hospital’s CORE Center, ASTYM® is part of our manual therapy toolkit to help people move with less pain and more confidence. The ASTYM system is a non-invasive rehabilitation approach that stimulates the body’s regenerative healing response, supporting the remodeling of soft tissues and the recovery of everyday function. Care is available in Washington and Odon, Indiana, and we welcome patients from Daviess County and across Southern Indiana.

What is ASTYM?

Soft tissues—muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia—can become irritated or restricted after overuse, repetitive strain, surgery, or injury. These changes may feel like tightness, stiffness, or lingering pain that limits activity. ASTYM uses specialized, rounded instruments and precise therapist-applied strokes to identify and address restricted, irritated tissues and to encourage the body’s natural healing. The goal is to rejuvenate soft tissues so you can move more freely and return to the activities you enjoy.

Who may benefit

ASTYM is used as part of a comprehensive physical therapy plan for many soft-tissue conditions, including:

  • Tendinopathy (e.g., Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff, “tennis elbow”)
  • Plantar fasciitis/heel pain
  • IT band–related symptoms and lateral hip pain
  • Shoulder and neck soft-tissue pain
  • Carpal tunnel–related symptoms (conservative care)
  • Post-surgical or post-injury scar tissue and restricted mobility
  • Hamstring and calf strains; recurrent muscle tightness
  • Low-back and sacroiliac–related soft-tissue pain

Your physical therapist will determine if ASTYM fits your goals and diagnosis and will combine it with exercise, movement retraining, and self-care strategies for best results.

How ASTYM helps

  • Stimulates the body’s healing response to support soft-tissue remodeling
  • Promotes healthy collagen alignment to improve tissue glide and flexibility
  • Reduces painful restrictions that limit motion
  • Supports return to activity by pairing manual therapy with targeted exercise

ASTYM is one option within a broader, individualized plan. Your therapist will explain how it fits with strengthening, mobility work, and activity progression.

What to expect

Evaluation

Your visit starts with a focused exam and goal setting. We identify the movements and activities you want to get back to and screen for involved tissues and movement patterns.

Treatment

During ASTYM, your therapist uses smooth, rounded instruments to glide over the skin with lotion, applying specific strokes to the involved areas. Most people describe sensations ranging from mild pressure to “good soreness.” Sessions are usually paired with exercise, mobility, and movement retraining to reinforce gains.

Frequency

Visit frequency varies by condition and activity goals; many plans include ASTYM 1–2 times per week as part of a short, focused episode of care. Your therapist will outline a plan that fits your schedule.

Home plan

You’ll receive simple, targeted exercises and activity guidance to maintain progress between visits.

Is ASTYM right for me?

Consider ASTYM if you have lingering soft-tissue pain, tightness, or limited motion that hasn’t improved with rest alone—or if scar tissue is restricting your movement after an injury or surgery. ASTYM is non-invasive and can be a helpful option even when symptoms have been present for months.

FAQs

Does ASTYM replace exercise?
No. ASTYM works best with exercise and movement retraining. Manual therapy addresses soft-tissue restrictions; exercise builds lasting strength and control.

Will ASTYM hurt?
Most people feel tolerable pressure or mild, short-lived soreness. Your therapist will adjust technique to your comfort level.

How many treatments will I need?
It depends on your condition and goals. Your therapist will outline a plan and expected timeline after your evaluation.

Is ASTYM safe after surgery?
ASTYM may be used to address scar tissue and restricted mobility when appropriate and in line with your surgeon’s protocol. We will coordinate with your provider as needed.
