Joint Replacement Therapy

Safe, personalized rehab to restore motion, strength, and confidence

Joint replacement is a big step toward living with less pain. The real transformation happens in rehabilitation. At Daviess Community Hospital’s CORE Center, our therapists guide you from surgery to daily life with a plan that reduces pain and swelling, restores range of motion, rebuilds strength, and helps you move with confidence. Care is available in Washington and Odon, Indiana, and we welcome patients from Daviess County and across Southern Indiana.

Why rehab matters after joint replacement

Whether you’ve had a knee, hip, shoulder, or other joint replaced, targeted therapy is essential to:

  • Reduce stiffness and swelling
  • Regain range of motion and flexibility
  • Rebuild strength and balance for safe walking and daily tasks
  • Protect the new joint with proper movement mechanics
  • Return to your routines—work, family, fitness, and hobbies

Without structured rehab, stiffness, weakness, and compensations can delay recovery and increase the risk of setbacks. We help you progress safely and steadily.

How CORE’s joint replacement program helps

Every plan is individualized to your surgery, surgeon protocol, and goals. Your sessions may include:

Pain & swelling management

  • Therapeutic modalities (as appropriate) to calm pain and swelling
  • >Elevation, compression, and pacing strategies you can use at home

Range of motion & flexibility

  • Gentle, progressive mobility work to restore motion without stressing the joint
  • Manual therapy—including joint and scar-tissue mobilization—to improve glide and comfort

Strength, balance & gait

  • Targeted strengthening for the muscle groups that support your new joint
  • Gait training (assistive device use, stairs, uneven surfaces)
  • Posture and body-mechanics coaching for lifting, transfers, and daily tasks

Functional practice & self-care

  • Training for getting in/out of bed or a car, standing from a chair, dressing, and household tasks
  • Home program that starts small and grows with you

Your plan is updated as you improve, so each visit is focused on what moves you forward.

What to expect

Evaluation

We review your surgery details and your surgeon’s protocol, discuss your goals, and assess pain, swelling, range of motion, strength, balance, and walking.

Personalized plan

Together, we set milestones (e.g., bend/straighten target for a knee replacement, walking distance, safe stairs) and map a visit schedule that fits your life. Your therapist teaches doable home exercises and shows you exactly how to perform them safely.

Progress you can feel

We measure pain, motion, strength, walking quality, and function—and share updates with your surgeon (with permission). As you hit goals, we advance your plan toward the activities you value most.

Common challenges we help you overcome

  • Fear of movement or reinjury
  • Stiffness that limits bending/straightening or reaching
  • Swelling and soreness around the surgical site
  • Weakness after immobilization or years of pain
  • Difficulty with walking, stairs, or getting up from a chair

You’re not alone—these challenges are common and treatable. We’ll coach you through them with expert care, encouragement, and accountability.

FAQs

How long will recovery take?
Timelines vary by joint and surgeon protocol. Many patients notice meaningful gains within 2–6 weeks, with continued improvements over several months.

Will therapy hurt?
Expect some post-surgical soreness, but therapy should be tolerable and purposeful. We progress at a safe pace and provide strategies to manage symptoms.

Do I need a referral?
Many insurers require a physician referral. Call (812) 254-8889 and we’ll help you determine next steps.

Can you help if my surgery was months ago?
Yes. Even if you’re behind on motion or strength goals, a focused program can still improve function and comfort.
