Dense breast mammography

Advanced Technology for Better Breast Health

Breast density demands certainty. At Daviess Community Hospital, we know that hearing you have dense breasts can be confusing or even concerning. We are here to help you understand what it means and how you can take the right steps for your health.

Did you know that 40–50% of women ages 40–74 have dense breasts? Dense breast tissue is common, but it can:

  • Make it harder for doctors to detect cancer on a mammogram
  • Increase your risk of developing breast cancer (women with very dense breasts are 4–5 times more likely to develop breast cancer than women with less dense tissue)
  • Lead to the need for additional imaging

That’s why DCH offers Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams, the only mammogram that is FDA-approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.

Why Choose Genius™ 3D Mammography™ at DCH?

  • Unmatched Accuracy: Finds 20–65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D mammograms.
  • Reduced Callbacks: Decreases the need for additional testing by up to 40%, helping reduce stress and unnecessary costs.
  • Comfort and Convenience: No additional compression is required, and the process takes just a few seconds longer than a traditional exam.
  • Trusted Results: Supported by more than 200 clinical studies worldwide, this technology provides your doctor with clearer, layer-by-layer breast images.

Understanding Dense Breasts

What is breast density?
Breasts are made of a mix of fibrous, glandular, and fatty tissue. Breasts are considered “dense” if you have more fibrous and glandular tissue than fat. Density is determined by the radiologist who reads your mammogram.

Why does density matter?
Dense tissue appears white on a mammogram—just like many cancers do—making it harder to detect abnormalities. At the same time, dense tissue itself increases your risk of breast cancer.

Do I still need a mammogram if I have dense breasts?
Yes. A mammogram is the only screening test proven to reduce deaths from breast cancer. Many cancers are still detected on mammograms even in dense tissue. The key is using the right technology.

Screening Guidelines

The American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging, and the NCCN recommend:

  • Annual mammograms starting at age 40 for average-risk women.
  • Women at higher risk (including those with dense breasts plus family history, genetic risk factors, or prior biopsies) may benefit from earlier screening or additional imaging.

If you have dense breasts, talk to your provider about whether you may need supplemental screening, such as breast ultrasound or MRI, in addition to your 3D mammogram.
