Breast density demands certainty. At Daviess Community Hospital, we know that hearing you have dense breasts can be confusing or even concerning. We are here to help you understand what it means and how you can take the right steps for your health.
Did you know that 40–50% of women ages 40–74 have dense breasts? Dense breast tissue is common, but it can:
That’s why DCH offers Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams, the only mammogram that is FDA-approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.
What is breast density?
Breasts are made of a mix of fibrous, glandular, and fatty tissue. Breasts
are considered “dense” if you have more fibrous and glandular
tissue than fat. Density is determined by the radiologist who reads your
mammogram.
Why does density matter?
Dense tissue appears white on a mammogram—just like many cancers
do—making it harder to detect abnormalities. At the same time, dense
tissue itself increases your risk of breast cancer.
Do I still need a mammogram if I have dense breasts?
Yes. A mammogram is the
only screening test proven to reduce deaths from breast cancer. Many cancers are still detected on mammograms even in dense tissue. The
key is using the
right technology.
The American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging, and the NCCN recommend:
If you have dense breasts, talk to your provider about whether you may need supplemental screening, such as breast ultrasound or MRI, in addition to your 3D mammogram.
Dense breast tissue doesn’t have to mean uncertainty. With Genius™ 3D Mammography™ at DCH, you can feel confident that you’re getting the most advanced screening available—right here in your community.
