If it’s your first mammogram—or the first one in a while—you’re not alone. Many women feel uncertain before their appointment. At Daviess Community Hospital (DCH), our goal is to make your experience quick, comfortable, and reassuring.
Our certified mammography team provides ACR-accredited care using Genius™ 3D Mammography™, which captures clearer, more accurate images with less need for callbacks. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your visit.
Before Your Appointment
Preparation can help make your exam even smoother.
- Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top.
- Skip deodorant, powders, and lotions on your breasts or underarms on exam day—these can affect the images.
- Arrive 30 minutes early to Admitting for check-in.
- If your provider hasn’t scheduled your exam, call (812) 254-9324 to book your appointment.
A Word from Our Lead Mammographer
“Most women finish their mammogram and say, ‘That was it?’” shares Andrea Brown, RT (R) BS, M, Lead Mammographer at DCH.
“The exam is brief, and our technologists explain each step so there are no surprises. Our job is to get excellent images while keeping you comfortable and supported.”
During Your Visit
Your technologist will walk you through every step.
- You’ll change from the waist up in a private dressing room and put on a gown.
- Each breast is gently positioned on the imaging surface.
- Light compression is applied for just a few seconds to ensure a clear image.
- Typically, two or more views of each breast are taken.
- The entire exam takes just a few minutes and most women are surprised at how easy it is.
Andrea explains, “Compression may feel a little uncomfortable, but it’s not painful—and it’s very brief. The clearer the image, the better your peace of mind.”
After Your Mammogram: Results and Follow-Up
Once your images are complete, they are reviewed by a board-certified radiologist.
- Your provider receives the full report.
- You’ll get a summary letter mailed to your home.
- If more images are needed, we’ll contact you promptly to schedule a follow-up exam.
At DCH, our goal is to ensure every patient leaves with confidence and clarity, never uncertainty.
Why Annual Mammograms Matter
- Mammograms can detect cancer early—before symptoms appear.
- Early detection saves lives and expands treatment options.
- The American College of Radiology recommends annual mammograms beginning at age 40.
- Women with dense breasts, family history, or high-risk factors may benefit from earlier or additional imaging.
Andrea adds, “Anxiety usually comes from not knowing what to expect. Once patients understand the process—and how fast it really is—they feel reassured and empowered.”
Your Comfort Is Our Priority
We know that compassion and communication make all the difference. Our mammography suite is designed for privacy, calm, and efficiency. From check-in to results, you’re guided by a caring technologist who treats you like family.
