DCH Staff Complete Simulation-Based Training to Enhance Neonatal and Obstetrical Emergency Care

Hands-On Training Focused on Maternal and Newborn Emergencies

At Daviess Community Hospital in Washington, Indiana, staff recently participated in a full-day simulation-based training designed to enhance the care of neonatal and obstetrical emergencies.

The training, presented by the Rural Health Innovation Collaborative, featured high-fidelity simulation, hands-on skills review, and expert instruction. The program provided realistic, scenario-based experiences to help staff sharpen critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills during time-sensitive emergencies.

Topics covered included:

  • Early recognition of imminent delivery and obstetric complications

  • Emergency care for pregnant and postpartum patients and newborns

  • Utilization of evidence-based practice guidelines

  • Recognition and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage

Strengthening Clinical Readiness Through Simulation

“Simulation-based training like this strengthens our team’s ability to respond to critical scenarios quickly and effectively,” said Troy Graber, RRT, MBA, Cardiopulmonary Manager at DCH. “By practicing with high-fidelity technology, our staff can sharpen their skills in a safe environment before applying them in real-world situations.”

The training’s state-of-the-art simulation technology replicates emergency conditions, giving clinicians the opportunity to refine both technical and teamwork skills. These realistic scenarios help ensure that DCH staff are prepared to respond confidently and collaboratively when every second matters.

Commitment to Continuous Learning and Maternal Safety

“Providing excellent care to mothers and newborns requires continuous learning and teamwork,” said Shawna O’Kelley Brinson, BSN, RN, Director of Obstetrics/Nursery at DCH. “This training gave our staff the opportunity to prepare for critical emergencies so that we are ready to respond when every second counts.”

This initiative reflects DCH’s ongoing commitment to advancing patient safety and implementing evidence-based best practices in maternal and neonatal care.

Certified Level II Obstetric and Neonatal Facility

Daviess Community Hospital is certified as a Level II Obstetric and Neonatal Facility by the Maternal and Child Health Division of the Indiana Department of Health. This designation means the hospital is equipped to provide specialized care for:

  • High-risk pregnancies

  • Infants born at 32 weeks gestation or later

  • Moderately ill newborns

  • Babies recovering from NICU stays

The multidisciplinary team includes OB/GYNs, pediatric providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and certified surgical technicians, all of whom participate in regular training and simulations to maintain this advanced level of care.

Statewide Recognition for Maternal and Infant Health

DCH has also been recognized as an INspire Hospital of Distinction by the Indiana Hospital Association and the Indiana Department of Health. This honor recognizes hospitals for implementing evidence-based practices in:

  • Infant safe sleep

  • Breastfeeding education and support

  • Perinatal substance use support

  • Addressing social drivers of health

  • Managing obstetric hemorrhage and maternal hypertension

“These designations highlight our commitment to improving health outcomes for mothers and babies across southwestern Indiana,” O’Kelley Brinson said.
