DAVIESS COMMUNITY HOSPITAL TO RESUME ELECTIVE SURGERIES

(Washington, IN) Governor Eric Holcomb’s recent order to allow hospitals to resume elective surgeries and other invasive procedures has paved the way for Daviess Community Hospital surgeons and other surgical team members to return to the operating room.

DCH provider offices have been contacting patients whose procedure or surgery had been postponed due to COVID-19. On May 4th, the hospital will welcome surgery patients to the hospital with a few noticeable changes to the process.

Four days prior to a procedure or designated time frame directed by the surgeon, each patient will be directed to Same Day Surgery (SDS). They are to enter through the Front/Outside door, located on the south side of the hospital just east of the main lobby entrance. This door will be clearly marked with signage for PRE-OP TESTING.

Once inside, the patient will be taken to a negative pressure room to be registered and have all pre-op testing done including a COVID-19 swab. This testing is to ensure COVID test results are received prior to a surgical procedure to ensure the increased safety of both patient and staff.

Upon entering Daviess Community Hospital, the surgical patient will be screened by a healthcare professional in the lobby and given a mask to wear. Our entire staff will also be wearing masks. Each patient is allowed one visitor the day of the procedure. This visitor may remain in the patient’s private pre-op room throughout the procedure.

To help minimize risk of asymptomatic spread of Covid 19 virus, we ask that every patient adhere to the following steps prior to surgery:

  • Continue to shelter in place to protect yourself from others in the community.
  • Follow physical distancing and handwashing guidelines. This also applies to the person who will be bringing you to and from surgery.
  • Avoid contact with others or leaving the home as much as possible prior to surgery.
  • Be aware of new respiratory symptoms (e.g. cough, shortness of breath, respiratory distress, sore throat) and notify the surgical navigator at 812-254-2760 (extension 1466) to determine next steps.
  • Check your temperature 2 Times a day, and notify the surgical navigator at 812-254-2760 (extension 1466) if a fever greater than 99°F (37.2°C) is present within 48 hours of surgery date.

“We remain committed to resuming these elective surgeries in the safest ways for our patients and our staff,” said Tracy Conroy, CEO. “Thank you to our patients for their cooperation and support during this time.”
