Acute Rehabilitation Unit
What can I expect from this program?
Rehabilitation nurses are trained to oversee your care around the clock. They work closely with you to encourage self-care and attention to personal hygiene.
Physical therapists work to develop your strength and mobility so you can become as functional and independent as possible. Exercises and other activities are designed to build confidence, strengthen muscles, and improve endurance and coordination.
Occupational therapists challenge you to perform the simple tasks of everyday living — cooking, eating, dressing — through individually designed exercises and activities and the use of specialized equipment.
Speech pathologists provide individual therapy programs to treat memory, language, speech, or hearing disorders that interfere with your ability to communicate.
Social workers help you and your family with discharge planning and counseling to ensure your smooth transition from the rehabilitation unit to your home.

What should I bring with me?
You will need several changes of loose-fitting street clothes suitable for exercising and movement, a sweater or coat, night wear, personal grooming items, and a pair of flat, rubber-soled shoes.
Will my insurance pay for rehabilitation?
Medicare, Medicaid, and many third party insurers reimburse for an inpatient rehab program for patients with physical and functional disabilities. Experienced staff will help the patient and family verify and obtain coverage.
How long will I need to stay in the hospital?
Many factors influence the length of stay, including severity of injury, previous health status, and medical complications. The Rehabilitation team will determine your estimated length of stay after they have evaluated your condition.
Can my family stay with me?
Your family can visit with you during specific hours, and they will also be asked to spend some time with you during your therapy sessions. Family teaching is an important part of you rehabilitation.
What will I gain from participating in this program?
At the DCH Rehabilitation Center, we are providing individualized and flexible treatment programs designed for individuals who have been disabled by injury or illness. Each individual referred to the program is evaluated and a rehabilitation plan developed to help the patient develop the skills to live as independently as possible after leaving the hospital.
Our primary mission is to focus on helping our patients to achieve the basic skills that will allow them to return to independent living and working environments.
We are unable to serve non-portable ventilator patients, dialysis patients, or children. In these cases, we can help you by recommending alternatives. For information, to make a referral, or to arrange a tour, please call our program director at (812) 254-8881.
