Admissions, Births, Clinic Visits Up for the Month

Daviess Community Hospital’s Board of Governors met for their regular meeting on September 22 and learned August was a busy month at the hospital. Brad Hardcastle, CFO presented the monthly financial report, showing that activity in many service lines of the facility, including patient admissions, births, and clinic visits, was up resulting in an increase in revenue over previous months.

He said that the increase in use of the facility, both for inpatient and outpatient services, coupled with the ongoing efforts to increase efficiencies, resulted in a positive bottom line for Daviess Community Hospital for the month.

John Rossfeld, CEO provided the Board with information about several recent staff appointments at the hospital. He announced that Marilyn Richard, SPHR, began work as the hospital’s new Human Resources Director on August 29th. Richard comes to DCH from Mishawaka with experience as a Human Resources Director for not-for-profit hospital systems as well as physician practices in northern Indiana. Michael Coen, MS, has begun work as the new Program Director for Transitions Behavioral Health Service, having moved back home to Indiana from Arizona. Coen has experience in providing direction for inpatient and outpatient behavioral health facilities in both Indiana and Utah.

Rossfeld also reported that several internal promotions have been made to fill vacant positions. Cara Veale, DCH Occupational Therapist who holds a Doctorate in Health Sciences has been promoted to the position of Manager of Outpatient Rehabilitation Therapies. Terri Hamilton, RN is serving as interim Vice President of Nursing and in the Emergency Department, Tina Durnil, RN has assumed the position of interim Nurse Manager. Also, DCH ER Physician, Dr. Rex Stroud has been promoted to the position of Emergency Department Medical Director following the departure of Dr. James Gruber who was recently deployed.

The Board learned that the hospital will again be offering two popular community health programs. Flu vaccines for the public as well as businesses, groups, and organizations are being provided by Home Care services. And, during October, the Radiology Department will provide reduced rate screening mammograms in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Finally, the Board received an update on the current physician searches for a second general surgeon, family medicine physicians, a hospitalist, and a psychiatrist. Although all the searches are underway, they learned the general surgeon search was showing the most progress.
