Where:
Report to Admitting Office with lab order. The Admitting Office is located in the front lobby of the hospital. Then, report to the Laboratory.
Purpose :
This test is for assisting the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
Preparation:
Make sure you schedule this test with the lab before coming in or have the doctor’s office schedule for you. Have nothing to eat or drink (except water) for 10 to 12 hours before the test. This test is done in 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hour periods depending on how the doctor orders the test specific for you.
Procedure:
It is important to arrive on time for your appointment. You must remain at the site. You may not smoke, eat (including candy and gum) or drink during testing.
1. A baseline is drawn and a urine sample is taken to test the glucose level when fasting.
2. After testing the blood and urine and levels come back normal a liquid beverage called Dextrose is given and should be ingested within five minutes. Let the lab staff know as soon as you finish the drink.
3. Blood and urine samples are then collected every hour.
Let the lab staff know at anytime if you feel sick during the procedure.
