Where:
Report to Admitting Office with lab order. The Admitting Office is located in the front lobby of the hospital. Then, report to the Laboratory.
Purpose :
This test is extensively used to establish the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. It may be used along with fasting blood sugar to follow patients with abnormal glucose tolerance tests.
Preparation:
Do not have anything to eat or drink for 10 to 12 hours if the doctor requires a fasting glucose specimen. If the doctor orders a 2 hour post prandial and no other testing then you must fast 10 to 12 hours before eating a well balanced breakfast, lunch or dinner. NO snacking before eating the meal. Start timing the 2 hour period when you start to eat the first mouthful of your meal. Take no longer than 20 minutes to eat your meal. After the meal is finished you should not eat or drink anything else until after the blood sample is collected.
Procedure:
A blood sample is taken at exactly 2 hours after you start your meal.
