Where:
You will report to the Admitting Office (main hospital entrance) 20 minutes prior to your appointment time. Admitting will direct you to Radiology.
Purpose :
Treatment for excess Thyroid hormones in circulation due to increased synthesis of hormone from a hyper active thyroid gland.
CONTRAINDICATIONS- PREGNANCY
Preparation:
If you are allergic to iodine, allergy prepapration is required:
Allergy Preparation:
1. give 50 mg Prednisone PO: 15, 7 & 1 hour prior to exam.
2. give 50 mg Benadryl PO: 1 hour prior to exam.
3. give 300 mg Tagamet PO: 1 hour prior to exam.
The following medications must be stopped:
- 3-7 days for anti-thyroid drugs (PTU and Tapazole)
- 6 weeks – Thyroxine
- 3 weeks – Synthroid
- 2 weeks – Seafood
- Delay 4 weeks following Radiographic contrast (IVP or CT Dye) hormone.
If you are taking or have taken any of the above medications during this time frame, call the department to have you test rescheduled. You must have pregnancy test at lab within 24 hours of therapy.
Procedure:
You will ingest a radioactive iodine capsule.
After Car

You should:
- Not have close contact with anyone for 48 hours.
- Not share food or eating utensils.
- Flush toilet twice and have sole use of bathroom.
- Wash clothes and linen thoroughly.
- Sleep alone in a room for at least 48 hours.
- Not travel by mass transit for at least 48 hours.
- Not travel on a prolonged automobile trip for 48 hours.
- Drink lots of fluids for 48 hours.
